00:01:21:17 - 00:01:33:01
Jennifer Bushong
Thank you. Thank you. What a wonderful introduction. I really appreciate that, and I am so grateful for our partnership over the years. And thank you for having me. Yeah.
00:01:33:01 - 00:01:52:24
David Mabee
No problem. The crowd is really excited to have you here today. So so we're stoked to have you as well. Jennifer. Hey, I just want to jump in. Jennifer. You haven't had an impressive career that spans, corporate media entrepreneurship and nonprofit leadership. Can you kind of take us back to where, that all started and how you got going with this?
00:01:52:26 - 00:02:15:20
Jennifer Bushong
Thank you. So I have my degree from University of Washington. I love being at the University of Washington and undergrad, degrees in communications took a lot of advertising and marketing in motion. And I had the opportunity to work with, with. I don't know if you remember, but a team basketball team called the Seattle SuperSonics. As well as Sephora and I with a lot of different emotions.
00:02:15:21 - 00:02:37:22
Jennifer Bushong
First, in a radio, you, sports play. Dr.. Radio at the time. And so I had I had a lot of great internships and a lot of lot of wonderful, people back into my career after I obtained a, degree. And then I got, into a fortune 500 company, and I was a telecom company at any time.
00:02:37:22 - 00:03:04:22
Jennifer Bushong
So I work in marketing corporate, had some of the best training, world class training that's out there and that, we talk about later as well. Well, and she will be Abby West. So I think really great, great to really surround myself. Always asking for more. I was I was on that learning journey and, back in my 20s as I was building and gaining the marketing platform.
00:03:04:22 - 00:03:31:01
Jennifer Bushong
So I feel like really fortunate to, have have great mentors that coach me as well as well. And, then I did a job of Fisher Broadcasting, where he was the CEO and, and, marketing director at the time so far. But, so I'd market marketing managers in each of those markets. And so that's really where I, where I learned, the research part of marketing that analyzes.
00:03:31:01 - 00:03:54:19
Jennifer Bushong
And that's correct. And as well as a. I was a corporate trainer and got to travel quite a bit across the Pacific Northwest as well as I was, I was Seattle at all time. So it was just just a great, fascinating experience that I still feel, very, very grateful for people that, that were not on, on my team but helped intermarry along the way.
00:03:54:25 - 00:03:58:28
David Mabee
Okay. As a Sonics fan, I have to know, what did you get to do for the Sonics?
00:03:59:01 - 00:04:19:13
Jennifer Bushong
Well, so you could you know, it was sophomore year in college, and, we we we got paid by the at the hour and then and I was not a big a baseball fan fan. Granted, I'm a mark marketer, so I like it. Like, I like the energy around, events and live events and I'll talk about later later.
00:04:19:15 - 00:04:37:17
Jennifer Bushong
But, then they, they, me, all the interns as we got paid. Also, corporate or partial ticket get to the game. And so I'm like, I'm like, oh, this is great. Great. So then all my, my truly my guy friends from went out at the time, they were like, wait, what? What, you have tickets to this game?
00:04:37:17 - 00:05:07:12
Jennifer Bushong
I'm like, I think they're really good seats to you. And I know it was it was so. So I just decided what would I be involved? And which later, you know, and now my life, my life and then, you know, it was kind of foreshadowed that at all. But I really learned a lot of time, everything from writing to comedy to, production and actually in sonics, they were out there and then the radio racing with the Sports Babe and promotion.
00:05:07:17 - 00:05:14:03
Jennifer Bushong
And so we were downstairs and so really got to, get my feet wet and that, that, big, big, big market.
00:05:14:03 - 00:05:22:07
David Mabee
And I think it's a pretty fun way to get your feet wet with a pro sports team, even if not a fan. It's got to be like a different environment and a different energy.
00:05:22:10 - 00:05:25:27
Jennifer Bushong
It was a hell of a lot of fun and I was happy to be there, there.
00:05:26:01 - 00:05:30:12
David Mabee
So we just need to figure out how to market, how to bring them back. I know they've been working on that for a while.
00:05:30:15 - 00:05:41:06
Jennifer Bushong
Yeah, yeah, well, I was an intern at the time, so I don't know if anybody. Definitely. I, I wonder what the experience and helped I think definitely make my career feel great, great fun. The people I work with with that. But then.
00:05:41:09 - 00:05:53:24
David Mabee
Yeah. So you're talking about that. So it sounds like you're rolling with some corporate media there and you're doing that. What inspired you to start your own firm, and what were those early days of JB marketing? Now? JB kind of look like.
00:05:53:26 - 00:06:30:27
Jennifer Bushong
Yeah. So J.B. marketing at the time. So I think thankfully, the NCAA, as you know, David was the greater went out to technology. And so I got to go to work at the time. So back I can really focus. I can I can push back, I can I decided to was more of a consulting company, and had the opportunity to lead several different events and hear about the region, with, with clients from political to nonprofit organizations like Brown and, and, as well as I was with a couple other, local startup startups.
00:06:30:27 - 00:07:10:20
Jennifer Bushong
And Jim and things like that. So, so for about ten years, JB marketing, hire great, great marketing, marketing that are still growing in their careers today and doing very, very well. Well, and then I went with another company I was working with for the greater OTR. We actually, for the TCC center. And so with, with, with, that team for about ten years or so, the vice president and got to, to have a lot of other opportunities there that's really, I think, live life and, really, you know, two things together and, and a to produce some of them there as well as, work on teams or some
00:07:10:20 - 00:07:41:21
Jennifer Bushong
other. Not really all the accounting people. We started to be and at the time in 2019, I kind of had a much better myself. And it was, what do I really like? Where am I going? You know, being a 40 something think at the time, I'm thinking, this is I want I want a company that I, I not only grow and inspire other people and help grow people, but I was I'm so passionate about about getting something.
00:07:41:21 - 00:08:07:00
Jennifer Bushong
I really do live and breathe, whether I am running or if I'm on the golf course or if I'm traveling somewhere where I'm gaining ideas and words and an innovation. Other, others, being able to surround myself, sell people that I like to work with and to work for, something that was really interesting to me and building a little church, grow and inspiration was really important to me.
00:08:07:00 - 00:08:34:00
Jennifer Bushong
So I, I knew definitely 20, 20, obviously came and and it was time I was right to restart JBI electronic media at the time, company was just felt very, very grateful that, the transferred right to work a lot of the health district during Covid, but serving as a geo serving on their their teams. And supporting in that, industry.
00:08:34:00 - 00:09:08:17
Jennifer Bushong
I learned a lot in a short amount of time. I'm it was a very stressful, very stressful list. And but I felt very, very great with the people that hired me. And then from there I ended up getting my client. And so 2020, 20, 21 picked up, you know, other clients around. And I realized at the end of 21 and this is, growing and so hired, I really, J.B. marketing was launched 20 20th June and now we're continuing.
00:09:08:20 - 00:09:35:24
Jennifer Bushong
We have great, great staff. I feel very honored to work with, with, outstanding clients. And they're really diverse. We used to say everybody, everywhere. We work hard and never between. So. So we have clients, from retail to hardware to, to government agencies that we're dealing with, with private houses and then you start there. And so it's a really interesting story about the team.
00:09:35:24 - 00:09:41:14
Jennifer Bushong
And, and I enjoy the most is, is is really understanding their brand and doing doing.
00:09:41:18 - 00:09:49:08
David Mabee
Right. So you mentioned adding the E when you relaunch. So how is the marketing landscape changed from that when you first got going to to now.
00:09:49:10 - 00:10:17:20
Jennifer Bushong
Yeah. So even when I was back in 2013, 2015 I got my master's degree in communications with another. And so at the time trying a lot of digital marketing to and that was one thing. I mean, you know, even right now, the market changing, there's new things available daily and we're increasing that. And that is something that even, you know, when I started out right, I was for the radio.
00:10:17:20 - 00:10:48:26
Jennifer Bushong
Radio. And that was downstairs in upstairs stairs. And so it was really, really, you know, traditional radio print, billboard, display ads. And so online wasn't even that really right, was the word processor. And, and orders were just coming out. Well, 1990s. So, so really I remember even in early 2000 working, one of the clients were saying, hey, we have to have you have to get on this was this was probably, probably a 2006, 2000 out of the oven.
00:10:49:02 - 00:11:12:04
Jennifer Bushong
So, I mean, I mean, compared to where we started it, compared to what I do every day today, almost live in a very digital media. Yeah. It was overwhelming to me when I, when I relaunched as, as even really positioning ourselves as we are, we know online no digital. This is where we need to go. Not really. Today but in the future.
00:11:12:07 - 00:11:34:06
Jennifer Bushong
Do we know everything? Absolutely not. Are we learning every day? Absolutely. Do I surround myself? I know people like myself so that we can knock, knock knock. Have a question about this, question about that. And I think I think that journey and that's not something writing about and marketing and Hollywood I love to love so much because as it's, you know, not stagnant, it's forever changing.
00:11:34:10 - 00:11:39:21
Jennifer Bushong
But I also there's some people around me that I, that I ask questions from, from two to.
00:11:39:23 - 00:11:56:24
David Mabee
Right. The core principles of marketing are still there, but you just have to figure out how to adapt them to the current landscape. So that makes total sense. So you you talked about you've done political clients, nonprofits, national brands. How do you how do you differentiate? How do you switch gears when you're, trying to reach these different audiences?
00:11:56:26 - 00:12:18:07
Jennifer Bushong
Well, it's all about glorifying like, Jack Johnson singles. So, so at any, any level and so blurring what the goal is, what's what other judges are and then we really sit down and look at their mission and their vision and their their values, and what what is what language that they're using in their business. What do they like?
00:12:18:12 - 00:12:38:10
Jennifer Bushong
They don't they don't. And what do they do? They want to change to grow their business. So it's it's really not about us. It's about applying those tactics of marketing that we you use back, back, you know, 20, 30 years, years ago now, like we can come up with some new framework that we implement, but just as smart more and more, you know, so strategic.
00:12:38:10 - 00:13:01:20
Jennifer Bushong
Is it measurable. Is it attainable. Is it real real real time I mean and then design found so so we do use some of those new models that we align marketing. And then how the tactics for that but every client is different. Every product is different, every service. And as you know, I mean, the data may be different based on what I'm doing.
00:13:01:23 - 00:13:22:29
Jennifer Bushong
So so we really, really, our team up, we did a lot of that analogy last week and, adaptable was one of the team. Team, JT was very adaptable to different clients. And we speak their language. And we have to sometimes change and, and communicate with them and how they may want to be communicated like so.
00:13:23:01 - 00:13:28:28
Jennifer Bushong
So, to answer your question, we're a daredevil and we make changes based on that, on that.
00:13:29:00 - 00:13:39:26
David Mabee
What's what's one of your favorite parts of that, that process. Do you have a favorite part or do you just like the whole I know you, you love diving in, but is there like one thing that you really like to focus on or that or to get started with?
00:13:39:26 - 00:14:01:27
Jennifer Bushong
I guess I think, I think just really clarifying and learning about their business that excites me because they are experts in their own business. And we always say that that their your unique brand is, is unique to them. My brand brand the same as their brand brand. So really, really just listening and learning everything about them. It's probably of our part.
00:14:02:00 - 00:14:13:26
David Mabee
Perfect. What's your philosophy when it comes to leading teams and delivering the results? Like how do you how do you bring your team into the fold? Are they there the whole time? Or what's your process with bringing your team into the fold and kind of leading them?
00:14:13:28 - 00:14:34:16
Jennifer Bushong
You know, you know, it depends on the process of the team. It depends on what the client needs and what what their strengths weaknesses are. But the processes listening and understanding objectives and then and clarifying who can can lead x, y, z or x y z strat strategy.
00:14:34:18 - 00:14:46:13
David Mabee
Yeah. So do you have like as you've done that, do you have like a specific campaign that's really stuck out to you or a company you've really enjoyed working with that you're like especially proud of?
00:14:46:15 - 00:15:15:08
Jennifer Bushong
I would say all of the companies that we work with, I'm really proud of it. And then also, sometimes getting there is a process, and, you know, one client, whether whether language, or communication or I naming a lot of times, you know, deliverables are different and, like, like we, we feel really grateful to have worked on different campaigns and starting during the campaigns, and seeing those end results.
00:15:15:08 - 00:15:29:06
Jennifer Bushong
And sometimes those results might be 12 one month, it might be two years. Other times those results are within a month. So just depending on, on the campaign, it can be different.
00:15:29:09 - 00:15:46:24
David Mabee
Right. And it sounds like with your experience, I mean, political nonprofit, all these ones you've had to deal with, like probably a lot of different, crises and communications and things like that. So what what would be a key thing that every organization should know when kind of things go sideways? Or what kind of advice do you give people when you're first working?
00:15:47:01 - 00:15:49:27
David Mabee
If something does go sideways in a campaign.
00:15:50:00 - 00:16:08:25
Jennifer Bushong
Well, first of all, they're high goals and objectives, and hopefully the campaign does not go sideways. There's always going knock offs. I mean, we never know how to. Right. So so if in instance, like like we want you want to want to get drinks, bring your beer. And I think that's, that's public relations comes into play with our marketing.
00:16:08:25 - 00:16:32:05
Jennifer Bushong
Right. So we always say, you know, there's there's marketing, we have advertising communications and all of that. We work together on that. But I think that that's what's so great about about strong strategic PR. And so you want to kind of kind of that together. But, how how can you use public relations into your marketing can help you do that?
00:16:32:06 - 00:16:33:03
Jennifer Bushong
That phrases.
00:16:33:10 - 00:16:51:25
David Mabee
Right. And I think also an important part is, is to think of crisis as that could happen, depending on what you're doing from the get go. Like don't get caught off guard, like try to plan those things out. So do you do some prep on there. And like I don't know what kind of like an on political campaign like, hey, if you say this, it could go that way.
00:16:51:25 - 00:16:55:07
David Mabee
Or what's your kind of strategy there for like prepping people?
00:16:55:09 - 00:17:24:28
Jennifer Bushong
We we do it and I do today not doing political campaigns. I have I have in the house however but we we, we don't actually have any any that we work with today and nor have we in the last five years, however, but with different products and or campaigns, we give a scenario A or B, and then then we can take a look, look, we have a really good marketing leading to that happen.
00:17:25:00 - 00:17:47:10
Jennifer Bushong
But I also think that that too, in any kind of kind of public relations or any kind of crisis of your employees and, and you should put your, your be your, be your boss. So those are the ones that are going to give you the, the best ammonia. They're going to kind of help share like follow lead by example and then the morale and for their friends.
00:17:47:10 - 00:18:01:12
Jennifer Bushong
So the more you can you can have that that energy. You know, you know from your in your internal staff to help help or internal or your or your internal or external. That's that strength during that in that crisis and that in that year as well.
00:18:01:15 - 00:18:09:15
David Mabee
Right. Well, yeah, I see you're leading and you're an inspiring right now. So what led to Inspire Northwest and what's it about. And kind of tell us how that came about.
00:18:09:18 - 00:18:33:07
Jennifer Bushong
I very excited about about our north and west. It's something that's been kind of on the vision board for over five years. When I, when I first restarted again, JB marketing, I wanted to do a larger event events, me live event and are full of energy, community and really bring and showcase and bring people together to showcase kind of what we want to do.
00:18:33:07 - 00:19:14:08
Jennifer Bushong
Do I really wanted to bring awareness to not only inspire, but every everybody's different. And, bringing world class speakers that have been published into the light arena to make such a great difference. The energy changes. And any time during the live event, event, energy is contagious, right? Right. And so seeing not only the fashion speaker, brand new CEO in a light uation and elevate that event and, and also to when that when the audience that now questions directly to these expert.
00:19:14:11 - 00:19:40:21
Jennifer Bushong
It's something it's wonderful. Let me let me. Technology now that we can we can pretend like we're live like we are today. But I think it's different in the audience. I live in Canada and and see everyone else around you. It's just just hosting it. And producing live events is something I love to do. And so now having world class speakers you're in our home town is going to be, just such a treat.
00:19:40:23 - 00:20:09:14
Jennifer Bushong
And so my goal is every everyone learn and grow from each other because our brands are all different. And I really have a fascinating for this event, every single attendee, we will be able to take the pretest because you're fascinated. I'm fascinated. And but what is what is available to us? And then how can we apply what we have learned to today's skills to really tell your story?
00:20:09:14 - 00:20:18:23
Jennifer Bushong
And so thrilled about it. And I can't wait to see at the event level, I believe that we're going to all learn something new uniquely, and then you can for different.
00:20:18:26 - 00:20:26:14
David Mabee
And what's your what's your goal with this for like the next five years? I never even thought about that. Or is it right now just like, hey, let's get this launched, let's get this first year done.
00:20:26:16 - 00:20:47:06
Jennifer Bushong
And yeah, I think, I think, I think about the first year here and really rely on it to be done. Well, you want everyone to, leave their feeling like they want more. I hope that everyone one and gaining work in but also network work with each other. So yeah, we will be continue to grow. Always and on and on.
00:20:47:12 - 00:20:56:21
Jennifer Bushong
Are you guys always like like we just watched people show for sidelines. So we want to make sure the lights and the doors are open. Right, right, right, right.
00:20:56:25 - 00:20:58:00
David Mabee
Which is not.
00:20:58:03 - 00:21:00:12
Jennifer Bushong
Going to take time. Time. Yeah.
00:21:00:14 - 00:21:17:12
David Mabee
I guess it's kind of frustrating. And then when ag area, sometimes it's like people don't buy their tickets until the last minute. So it's really stressful. As an event person, I know from our end, because a lot of the stuff happens like last minute. And I think that happens everywhere. I'm not sure, but it seems to be really true here.
00:21:17:12 - 00:21:29:02
David Mabee
So. So do you have any mentors or kind of role models who have kind of helped you shape JB and Inspire northwest, or what's your what's your take there on on your mentorships?
00:21:29:04 - 00:21:49:28
Jennifer Bushong
Oh, absolutely. I think if I could list, all of my mentors and all those people that inspire me, me it would be a be a book, probably 4000 pages. It's it's just deftly I have so many people that inspire me every day, but I definitely want to get a cropped out doctor Soutine, to the world, to so many, many people.
00:21:50:04 - 00:22:13:23
Jennifer Bushong
The town center, I mean, so many people that I listen to. And my staff, listen to inspiring me over the last five years. And this is my vision, more, more humble. I mean, so many, many other people that have either been on my team, but the same thing when I want to start our website, six months ago and even even five years, five years ago that I told of all the people that I, that I trust.
00:22:13:25 - 00:22:48:18
Jennifer Bushong
And so what do you think? And they they talk to me, throw it away. And so I so like that that's been so great throughout my career. Abraham Han, you'll get to meet and inspire your ten and, a dynamic high g, wonderful mentor, co-leader, trainer, owner, you name it. So, I mean, there's so many, many people, from, you know, Fisher broadcasting, Fisher and the lately around one of my main and, you know, you know, people that have, have, have, have had, Jenny a red role.
00:22:48:20 - 00:23:15:15
Jennifer Bushong
I mean, you're on your team, right? It's gonna be 20, 20 Lions. I mean, I mean, yeah, this is an award ceremony. What I want, I want, and everybody that touched my life. I'm really, really, you know, I think, my team too. And I think my staff at different from entities that I meet, whether they've been just out of college or not, I've learned a lot along, and and know have listened and I think they were all us as leaders and as all nerds.
00:23:15:15 - 00:23:42:18
Jennifer Bushong
We're always trying to kind of leadership skills. And as those have changed over the years because as people of change, sometimes humbling. And you're like, like, you know what? I did not do that very well. Let me do that better at our time. Yeah, let's learn from that in that time and sort of that, campaign or that event and let's see how we can do this better at in time.
00:23:42:24 - 00:24:08:12
Jennifer Bushong
And I think being, wanting, having, having passion of wanting to be better, better has really helped shape, kind of who I am, but also our brand and, and, and kind of what I want to give to others. And I think that that, that early on, for instance, to get a GAC and to see the growth here, not only to see these young adults that I talk to flourish in, in their careers as well.
00:24:08:12 - 00:24:08:26
Jennifer Bushong
Well.
00:24:08:29 - 00:24:25:05
David Mabee
So that's what I was going to get to. Since you've you've had that mentor ship happen for you. Are you paying that back to your employees and kind of, what's your what's your goal or what what's kind of your, mentorship, position with your, with your own employees? Because it sounds like that's important to you.
00:24:25:07 - 00:24:49:23
Jennifer Bushong
I think I think throughout my career, I think whether there's a nonprofit that I co-founder, did different. We had a lot of interns inside my positions. And so I think I've always tried to hold back and and I think that has been something that, I've been it's been really, really a high our level as far as people know that I will answer the questions that they have.
00:24:50:00 - 00:25:12:01
Jennifer Bushong
I will just treat it. I will provide better service. How how we support each other. Because I think that's a big thing is I'm a big believer in internships, and I'm a big believer in volunteering and especially young young in your ear, I think I think that is awesome way to learn those skills, is to get into the generation and volunteer for them.
00:25:12:03 - 00:25:40:27
Jennifer Bushong
And somehow you how are you how, give, give, you know, you know, learn those skills that you may not get in your day to day job. You're wanting wanting careers, for that matter. But yeah. Yeah, it's really, really we we we I try to do as much as I can here. I, I for the most part we, we hire grow people that are wanting to have have just as much passion in marketing but also so we can we have those skill set sets and and we have, we have people that job shadowing often.
00:25:41:00 - 00:25:42:23
Jennifer Bushong
I mean, I'm in a church or tattooing thing.
00:25:42:27 - 00:26:02:15
David Mabee
Yeah. I notice your team is always out of events too. So I see you guys around a lot. So, it's awesome. It's, one way to grow is, I mean, and learn is having that mentorship and then taking responsibility for that is awesome. So good on you. Jennifer, we're wrapping up that this flying by here. So just going to get into our signature part of the show here.
00:26:02:17 - 00:26:13:18
David Mabee
We have questions designed to inspire, invest and empower, people. So on the inspiring part here, what's one piece of advice you'd give to someone launching their first campaign or business?
00:26:13:21 - 00:26:37:17
Jennifer Bushong
I would say, campaign. We'd be really clear in their goals and expectations and, managing expectations and aligning those with the true marketing strategies that you, business, and then hiring professional, people to fulfill those role. 00:26:37:19 - 00:26:44:13
David Mabee

00:26:44:15 - 00:26:54:22
